Alaska Halibut Fishing Trips

Questions and Answers for Your Next Alaska Halibut Fishing Trip

Alaska Halibut Fishing Trips are all about the thrill of potentially catching something enormous. It is this same thrill that has, for decades, brought fisherman back to Alaskan waters over and over again.

This page contains an ongoing compilation of questions and answer about Alaska Halibut Fishing Trips.

Fishing for Halibut is a BLAST! Be prepared!

When is the Halibut Fishing Season?

Alaska Halibut can be caught anytime from March through October, but the peak season lasts from May through September. I usually go in the month of June. Those on my charter trip have always caught their limits. Either I'm good luck (unlikley) or June is a pretty good month to halibut fishing in Alaska.

What Should I Take?

  • LUNCH and BEVERAGES (no alcohol) It's a long day to be without a lunch. Hooking into a big halibut is very tiring and creates a big appetite!
  • A COOLER Most halibut fishing charter services will fillet your day's catch for you. A cooler is the perfect way to transport your halibut fillets back home. Special Note: If you'd prefer to have your halibut processed and shipped backed home consider Captain Jack's Seafood Lockers

  • CAMERA and/or VIDEO CAMERA Between fishing and the wildlife that you're likely to see, forgetting your camera would be a bad move!
  • WARM JACKET Alaska, even in summer, can be a bit cool...especially on the water
  • RAIN GEAR Yes, it's a possibility that you'll get rained on. August is one of the most rainy months in Alaska
  • POLARIZED SUNGLASSES Squinting all day is no fun
  • SUN SCREEN Sun burn anybody?
  • PATIENCE and a GOOD ATTITUDE 10-12 people on one boat for 11 hours? Patience and a good attitude will be something good to take along
  • NON-SLIP FOOTWEAR Needless to say that traction is going to be important when you are trying to reel that "monster" in! Most fishing boats have non-skid decks, but a good pair of shoes/boots is something to put some thought into.

What About Fishing Gear and Other Equipment?

Alaskan halibut fishing charter services typically provide ... 1) All rods and reels, 2) All bait and tackle, 3) Free Fish Filleting, 4) Coast Guard licensed boat captain, 5) All safety gear, 6) Clean and safe fishing boat and 7) Expert instruction.

How Far is Seward from Anchorage?

Seward is 127 miles from Anchorage. It will take about three and a half hours to drive there. Another popular Alaska Halibut Fishing location is Homer Alaska. Homer is approximately 220 miles (6 hour drive).

The road between Anchorage and these two locations is not a full-blown highway, so the drive will be a bit slower than you might expect.

The first fishing trip to Seward we went on, Dad and I drove 169 miles to Seward early that morning, from Wasilla, then back home that night. Needless to say, that wasn't a good plan.

On the way home, we had to stop and get out of the truck at least five times. We did everything we could to wake ourselves up! It was dangerous. All we wanted to do was just sleep!

Word of Warning: The Seward Highway is the road that runs from Seward to Anchorage. It is a dangerous road and being impaired, at night, by sleepiness only adds to the danger. Without having the stats in front of me, I believe I'd be correct to say that more people are killed on the Seward Highway than on any other in Alaska. Most occur just south of Anchorage.

In restrospect, getting a hotel room in Seward would have been a great solution.

Also, having made arrangements for someone such as Alaskan Splendor to be there to take us home would have been great!

Both of these options would have added to the overall cost of the fishing trip, but avoiding a potentially deadly accident is worth it!
