This is because it is dark for so much of the day. At it's darkest (December 21st) the sun will rise around 10amand will set by 4pm. If the area is experiences cloudy weatheror a snow storm, it will make the daylight appear even shorter. Winter time also brings moose down out of the hills and mountains where they find food sources much easier....like my backyard and those of others! It is estimated that there are about 2000 moose that live in and around the city of Anchorage. On a sad note, there are approximately 300 or more moose killed on the roads in the MatSu Borough (county) where I live. While a collision with a car is always fatal for the moose, it can sometimes be fatal for the people in the car.
