Anchorage Alaska is a great big beautiful 1700sq sq mile span of artic splendor!

I still recall arriving in Anchorage for the first time! After being on the Alaskan Highway for six days, we found it hard to believe that there was so much city (read: civilization) this far north!

Unless you drive here, you miss out on this very cool perspective! Afterall, it's along way to the "Top of The World!"

Anchorage: A Big, Wild, Life!

Anchorage Alaska is situated on a Penninsula with The striking Chugach Mountains set as the cities backdrop and the massive Cook Inlet, with the second highest tide surges, positioned at it's shores. The Cook Inlet is the northernmost reach of the Pacific Ocean.

Anchorage encompasses a 2,000 sq mile , which is about the size of the state of Delaware.

Mt. McKinley (Denali) is located approximately 130 miles to the north.

Anchorage is home to more than 300,000 people. The population in Alaska is overall younger than other states in The United States. Not that many have been born here, raised here and grown old here yet!

Whether you are planning an Anchorage Alaska vacation, moving to Alaska or already living here, our hope is that you'll find this page informative, fun and full of the information that you are seeking.

Places to See in Anchorage

Wow! So much to see and do. I've lived near Anchorage for over four years and I'm still trying to see it all. I hope that my comments and experience will help you to plan your Anchorage tour and vacation in Alaska better Anchorage is unrivaled when it comes to outdoor fun! It does a great job on the indoor activities as well. Afterall, we get a lot of winter up here. We need need things to do up here when it's cold outside too!

Just a few ideas include glacier viewing, wildlife viewing, fishing of all kinds, hiking in nearby State Parks, visit city parks, take a flight-seeing trip...or even catch a touring Broadway play.

Where else can one scale a glacier and see a Broadway play all in the same day? ... Now you are getting a glimpse of the collision of High Culture and the Wild Alaskan Lifestyle that I was talking about earlier. It's what makes Anchorage Alaska so cool!

Yes, Anchorage is a gateway to the other parts of Alaska, but don't forget to allocate some of your vacation time to visit the attraction to be found in Alaska's largest city!

Anchorage 101

The streets in Anchorage are laid out with letters for streets running north to south and numbered streets for those running east to west.

Interestingly, there was never a "J" Street.

The reason, as it was explained to me by a local tour guide, many of the early settlers were of Norwegian descent and these Norwegians had troubles pronouncing the "J" sound!
