Anchorage
Restaurant Guide
Anchorage
prides itself on it's bizarre blend of frontier attitude with high-culture.
The
Anchorage Restaurant scene is no exception!
There
aren't many other cities in the world where you can be hiking beautiful
mountain peaks in close proximity to some of the largest mammals in the
world ... then an hour or so later be dining on world-class
cuisine at one of the Best Anchorage Restaurants.
Alaska
may be remote in some respects, but Alaska is known as the crossroads
to the world (due to its proximity to Europe and Asia) and this is
strongly reflected in Anchorage
Restaurants.
Anchorage Restaurants
reflect influence from Asia, the South Pacific and the Mediterranean.
On
these Alaska Restaurant pages, you'll find out about those that are
well-known to tourists and those that are not so well-known but great
restaurants all the same.
Some of Our Family Favorites
Here
is a short list of some of our favorite places in the Anchorage area to eat.
They are in no particular order, but we like them....plain and simple.
Being
a big family, we appreciate restaurants that don't cost an arm
and
a leg. These are only a sampling of Anchorage Restaurants. As we try new ones,
we'll tell you about them here.
Pizza Olympia - Greek Food
2809 Spenard Rd Anchorage, Alaska
My
wife heard about this Anchorage Restaurant first and had to try over
and over again to get me to take her there.
I initially made the
huge mistake of
judging Pizza Olympia by it's fast-food-sounding name and rather plain
store front appearance...but it's what's inside that keeps Alaskans
coming back for more.
Pizza Olympia, owned and operated by several generations of the
Maroudas family since 1985, makes it's mark on the Anchorage Restaurant
scene with it's food and interior atmosphere...as it should.
The food is outstanding and the service is warm, caring and attentive.
Authentic Greek and Italian food is served and even though I've never
been to Greece, I imagine this restaurant is what it WOULD be like!
The first time we met co-owner Athina Maroudas, she thanked us for
coming, visited with us briefly and, in authentic Greek-style, gave my
wife and I both a hug. Made us feel like we were family. Great
experience (September 2006)!
My wife Sheri had the Gyro and I
had a roasted lamb dish. The
lamb was very good, but I'm getting the Gyro next time. Sheri gave me
one bite and then got stingy on me. That tasted sooo good! I thought
that I had had a Gyro before, but I've never tasted one like that one!
Pizza Olympia is in mid-town and worth the cab fare or whatever you
have to pay to get there. This is one Anchorage Restaurant not to be
missed!
The
Alaska Bagel Restaurant
113
West Northern Lights Boulevard
No
matter where our
family has lived, my wife Sheri and I have always sought out a good
bagel shop. We were very happy to discover The Bagel Restaurant in the
midtown area of Anchorage.
This Anchorage Restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch. It
closes for the day at 3:30pm, so keep this in mind.
A huge selection and great table service make this a favorite place to
eat for Alaskans "in the know"!
We've been here twice. Each time the waiter/waitress has gone out of
his/her way to make or visit an outstanding one. Just tell them that it
is your first time there and ask them to explain how the whole bagel
ordering thing works. That's all it will take! The last time there I tried the Lox
and Cream Cheese plate. With this one, you actually build
your own bagel from all the fixings coming to you on a place.
For those who don't know, Lox is smoked salmon. I believe that I am
correct when I say that it is ONLY smoked...not actually cooked. After
initially turning nose up at the idea, yet wanting to try something
truly Alaskan, I decided to get it...besides, Sheri was giving me a
hard time for turning my nose up at it initially.
I have to admit, it tasted very good!
Special Note:
Shhh ... don't tell Sheri this though. I let on like it wasn't all that
special. Call it a pride thing, if you must! ;)
The
only negative is ...! the parking situation.
It's hard to find a parking place, especially if you
drive something large. They are located in a "strip mall" of sorts and
there are just too few parking spaces for the amount of people that
frequent stores in that area. Go to this Anchorage Restaurant
anyway though! ;) CLICK

Ding
How Restaurant1241
Muldoon Rd 1-907-345-0033
A
Mongolian BBQ and a local favorite. Additionally Ding How has
a
pretty nice Chinese Buffet. Because of it's popularity, it
can
get crowded. I always like going in for a late lunch.
Ding How is a popular choice for office
and "going away" parties.
China
King Buffet711
E. Fireweed 1-907-276-1838
Sheri
and I discovered this cafeteria-style Chinese Buffet while we had some
time to kill while waiting for a nearby movie to start.
Located
right next to the Fireweed Movie theater, The China King Buffet boasts
a 60-item buffet. I was "wowed" by the selection, which
included
sweet and sour duck, spicy scallops and crab legs. It
wasn't King Crab and the legs were not that big, but the
buffet
had crab legs none the less
