Anchorage
RestaurantsAlyeska's
4-Star "Seven Glaciers Restaurant"
Yesterday
I had the privilege of dining at one of the top Anchorage restaurants
... The Seven Glaciers Restaurant!
Actually
located a short drive south of Anchorage, Seven
Glaciers is a 4-Star restaurant perched high atop Mt. Alyeska near
Girdwood Alaska...part of the famed Alyeska Resort.
I was invited to go there by Bill and Marsha
BonDurant of Wisconsin. They, along with fellow traveler Kathy (sorry
Kathy, I have forgotten your last name already) were on their
last day of their Alaskan vacation. This was their first ever
trip to Alaska!
Dinner at Seven Glaciers was the
last stop of an eight hour private
limousine tour that the three of them had organized.
I was lucky enough to have been their hired driver for the
day.
It was amazing how fast eight hours
flew by!
Anyway, our dinner reservations were for
6:45pm. To get to the restaurant we needed to take a 60-person
tram to the top of Mt. Alyeska. The ride
normally will cost you around $16, but if you have a dinner
reservation, the ride is free. We picked up our complimentary
tram tickets at the nearby ticket window.
As
expected the view was breath-taking. The sky was mostly clear and we
could see for miles.
We had to laugh as
Marsha kept her eyes fixed out the back at the view, because she wasn't
about to look forward to where we were going. The steep
hillside and the sight of our destination "way up there" was more than
she wanted to see.
A View From On Top of The World!
Anyway, we made
it...white knuckles and all.
We had a few minutes to
kill so we snapped a few photos. There were beautiful
panoramic views of the mountains, hanging glaciers, sparkling streams,
small hillside lakes, and towering spruce in every direction.
After
a few minutes of waiting in the lounge, we were seated in the
restaurant. Most ever seat in the restaurant has a great
window view. We, unfortunately, had one of the non-window seats.
This
was because we made our reservations only two to three hours ahead of
time.
One of the waitresses told us that
when one calls in a reservation they simply need to ask for a window
seat. Our late reservation was the reason we didn't get a
table directly by a window.
The tables by
the windows are taken by those who call earliest.
Alyeska
Resort has nine restaurants and Seven
Glaciers is probably the most expensive of the nine.
Here is a link to the summer
2007 menu. As you can see, the main entrees range
in price from $30-$70 per plate.
There certainly are
less expensive Anchorage Restaurants, but this one is a very
cool experience.
As an appetizer we
all shared a dish of Alaskan King Crab cakes. The crab cakes
tasted great, but it was the scallion vinaigrette that really made an
impression on us. It was fantastic!
The Food Was Outstanding!
For
dinner I ordered the Filet
of Sole Almandine with Grilled Asparagus, Lemon Thyme
Beurre Blanc and Apricot Wahini Rice Pilaf. I also had the
Rock Shrimp Salad to go with it.
Honestly,
I'm not even sure what all that is, but I can tell you it tasted very,
very good!
Wow, $45 can go fast though!
Kathy
had Medallions of Whole
Roasted Beef Tenderloin with Pesto Roasted Yukon Potatoes,
Asparagus, White truffle Bearnaise, and Roast Shallot Bourbon Glace.
Bill
and Marsha both had Pan
Seared Curry Encrusted Halibut with Ginger Coconut Coulis,
Braised Baby Bok Choy and Citrus Jasmine Rice.
The
portions were small but the taste did a great job of substantiating the
price. There was no "pretty good" when it came to describing
the tastes. It was was fabulous!
I descended the mountain 15 minutes
ahead of the
BonDurants and had their limousine
pulled up to the curbside. Upon their arrival at the bottom of the
mountain, I took them straight to the airport to catch their flight.
What
a great day, capped off by even a greater evening at one of the top
anchorage area restaurants.
In the end the three
of them thanked me for taking them to "such a beautiful place".
They said that it really capped off a wonderful Alaskan
Vacation.

Special Note: Don't
ask me how, but I made it on this particular trip without my camera.
Bill and Marsha have promised to send me a picture or two that they
took that day. I will post them to this site when I receive
them.
